Reflection of my work so far...

Image
Looking back on my research on documentaries so far, I have really found it interesting discovering how documentaries came about. From the start of The Lumiere Brothers, and Robert Flaherty to documentaries done on celebrities. The dynamic of the evaluation of these documentaries is intriguing. I had also never thought about the different ways in which you could film a documentary. Learning about Bill Nichols has enabled me to further my ideas for my final documentary.  At the moment I know I want to do something with the effect of social media and how much everyone seems to be using it. I could do this in a numerous of ways with the modes of documentary. I could explore using the observation, expository, reflexive or even performative. I like the idea of the poetic mode however think I would face some difficulties with this mode for my documentary. More recently I have been reading some books, including the work of Jenny Kidd 'representation' and also a media dictionary by D

Mode Experiment- Ruby's life

Expository Mode  Here I experimented with the idea of using a voice over, following a narrative of Ruby's school day. I did quite like this idea as it informs the viewers about what is happening and is a good way of showing this.  Click Here For Video  Poetic Mode  Here with the same footage I used this video with no voice over or no subtitles to indicate what the documentary is about, this is a way of the poetic mode.   Click here for video of poetic mode

Poetic Mode - Experiment

Image
Click here for video I decided to try the poetic mode of documentary, I thought I would do time lapses throughout the day, I thought this was quite a fun idea to mess around with. I liked the way this made it look as though time was passing quickly. I think this idea could possibly be put into my documentary somehow although I would like to experiment further with the other modes.

Bill Nichols 6 modes of Documentary

Image
In my SlideShare I went through the 6 documentary modes, talking and discovering myself what they all were. Since doing this I have noticed in documentaries that I have watched that some might have aspects of a few different modes in their documentaries, so this is an idea I could play with for my final documentary. But before doing that I need to experiment around with the 6 modes to enable me to fully understand what they are like, and what I will like to do.  Click for Slideshare

Analysis Of Louis Theroux, 'Talking to Anorexia'

Image
I started to watch this documentary to see the way it was filmed as in my documentary I am hoping to do some sort of interview. In this Documentary the interviews were done slightly different to normal interviews, Louis Theroux does series of documentary some on very challenging subjects like this one. How he did this documentary was doing less formal interviews. he visited the patients houses and spoke to them where they were clearly most comfortable, and so possibly don't feel pressured or don't feel as if they are being examined. I like how this documentary is very honest, similarly to the Jesy Nelson documentary. I like how truthful it is and an incite to lives you don't realise. You learn from something you don't often see or you don't often talk about.  In these two clips that I have taken a screenshot of you can see Louis Theroux sat next to the people he is talking too, rather in some documentary interviews you usually see people sitting opposite than
